MEDIATRENDS
Hannu Nieminen: "Traditional media do not speak
the language that people believe reflects their life"
Why don't people trust traditional media, which language should be used in mass media and what does the audience need apart from entertainment?
PROFILE
Hannu Nieminen

An editor-in-chief of the academic journal "Tiedotustutkimus" since 2005, full member of Nordicom (Nordic Information Centre for Media and Communication Research) since 2010.
Honorary Professor of the MSU Faculty of journalism.
Most important mediatrends according to professor Nieminen: is the decline of print media slowing down?
"Print media are meant and edited and published for the elite audience - political and economical. They do not speak enough about everyday problems of ordinary people. And they do not speak the language that people feel is of their live".
Why is governmental pressure on the media increasing?
What should media offer to the audience and how can they get closer to the younger generation?
"We can see that the feeling of insecurity has increased. Especially among the young people, who can not be sure about their future. Media should give the answers: what to expect, how to act in the modern world?"
Is there a place for entertainment in modern media?
"The number of journalists is declining - I mean, professional journalists. Today a good journalist is requested many specific skills. This underlines the importance of journalistic education".
